Three factors must come together to achieve pregnancy: sperm, eggs and the uterus. Pregnancy cannot occur if the male does not have sperm or if the female does not have eggs. The process where either an egg or sperm are obtained is called donation. As in kidney or liver donation, the terminology is the same where the donor gives the cells to the recipient.

Women who are not producing viable eggs started obtaining oocytes from a donor in 1984. Eggs collected from a donor are fertilized with the sperm from the recipient’s partner. The embryos formed are then transferred to the recipient. This method is practiced legally in Australia, England, Belgium, Israel, USA and North Cyprus.

Using donor sperm has been around for much longer. When a man does not produce sperm, the couple can become pregnant using donor sperm through artificial insemination.

Both sperm and oocyte donation is banned in Turkey. Clinics in Turkey are only allowed to provide consultancy services and prepare the donor and recipient with the necessary drug protocol. Research done on women who have had babies through egg donation show that the love and attachment they feel toward their children are no different than women with their biological children. But a full psychological evaluation should be required of all couples considering donation.
